Essential Question: What do you want to say about the world?
Art I: Foundations (Grades 9-12)
Deering High School
For this project, my students learned about the historical roots of Surrealism. We identified the common characteristics of surrealist work, and students created their own surrealist collages incorporating these characteristics. Most importantly, I made clear to my students that this work was about expressing an idea. We discussed how artists use visual language to express feelings and ideas about the world, and told my students they must create a collage that expresses an idea. For many, this led to a collage that spoke about a local or global issue.
